In contrast to ‘animation’ I prefer the term ‘liveliness’, because the latter word has not been loaded with connotations by any communities of practice, fields of academic study, or social groups. Literally, liveliness is simply a perceptual and experiential quality. It does not assume any particular physical material, media type, presentation context, target audience group, or purpose of use. The purity and non-specificity of the word make it perfect for matching the nature of the animated phenomena I have been describing.

Each chapter concludes by proposing a new theoretical and design principle on the study and manifestation of technological liveliness. Each principle is also encapsulated in a qualitative variable as part of the analytical tools. The observer perspective (Chapter 2) looks into the perception of animated phenomena. The chapter addresses the general question: what kinds of phenomena make things ‘look lively’ to a spectator? Instead of assuming the conventional view that pits organic behavior against mechanical motion, the chapter, after reviewing ideas from Rudolf Arnheim, Daniel Dennett, and latest perceptual or cognitive psychology research results, proposes a new typology of liveliness.

In the terms ‘intended’, ‘experience’, and ‘technology-enabled’ lie the nuances. First, technological liveliness is intended for someone. That is to say, there is a designer arranging, programming the phenomena. Second, technological liveliness is to be experienced. In other words, there is someone perceiving and interacting with the phenomena. Third, technological liveliness is enabled by technology, rather than emerging naturally like biological or social phenomena. In fact, the notion of the Computational Universe is immense; in this notion the ‘computer’ is comparable to Mother Nature who governs everything in the world (Hayles, 2005, p.
